Summary

This two-day class teaches participants how to teach adults (particularly research scientists) how to program. It introduces basic concepts from educational psychology and instructional design, and looks at how to apply these ideas in both intensive workshops and regular classes. Topics will include:

• Cognitive differences between novices, competent practitioners, and experts
• Formative vs. summative assessment
• Reverse instructional design
• Fixed vs. growth mindset, stereotype threat, and other factors affecting learning

Pre-class readings will be distributed several weeks in advance. Please note that participants will be asked to complete two additional exercises after this class in order to be certified as Software Carpentry instructors.
