The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC)
Norwich Research Park
Norwich, NR4 7UH, UK

The Ensembl project, a joint project between the EBI and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, provides a comprehensive and integrated source of annotation of mainly vertebrate genome sequences.  This 1-day workshop offers participants the possibility of gaining hands-on experience in the use of the Ensembl Core API

The database schema and the API design as well as its most important objects and their methods will be presented. This will be followed by practical sessions in which the participants can put what they learn into practice by writing their own Perl scripts.

Course Objectives: To provide participants with an understanding on how to fetch genes, transcripts, sequences, and other Ensembl data using the Perl API.

Prerequisites: Ability to code in Perl and basic molecular biological and genetic concepts.  A basic knowledge of Ensembl is advantageous.
